If Not For

Michael Peach

If not for the dark smudge
Upon her nose, resembling leprosy,
Or her dishevelled fur, suggesting rape
By a restless tom I saw at hand,
I would be tempted to regard the cat
Who’s set up home with kitten fair
Within a grotto quaint
As Felis Madonna Sancta.
