Shakespeare (15)

Michael Peach

In Shakespeare’s plays self-knowledge is the task
He sets for those he wishes to achieve
Integrity behind whatever mask
With which themselves and others they deceive.
To some a new persona will be lent –
Of peasant, for example, priest or page –
But all on self-revealing quests are sent
Within the mind and in the world on stage.
Yet, more than this, his fallen figures tell
Without repentance and forgiveness guilt
Condemns a soul to that regressive hell
On which the egocentric life is built.
++Thus marriage Will suggests of Greek and Jew:
++To know oneself and keep one’s conscience true.
