Albany’s Insight

Michael Peach

While Goneril and Regan are possessed
By Animus throughout the tragedy,
In Lear, their father, Anima’s repressed
Until he finds, within, some empathy.
From start mild Albany seems to comprehend,
Provoking Goneril’s aggressive slurs,
That powerful men will bring about the End
Unless their female side hubris deters.
So, far from being harmful, his gentle deeds –
Anima friendly – are Soulful, good and wise;
And, though obliged to fight, he plants the seeds
Of peace and counters Edmund’s evil lies.
++If Anima is left upon the shelf,
++Humanity will prey upon itself.
