The Christian Legend

Michael Peach

As allegory or myth of love,
Regarding man and God above,
The Christian legend’s more profound
Than those in pagan cultures found.

But deemed a literal sketch of God,
“Who, dressed as human being, trod
On earth so He for us could die”,
This tale’s an egoistic lie:

Not only does it make the Lord
A scapegoat, servant; hustler, bawd,
It deifies the pagan truth
That “gods” revere eternal youth.
