To a Cheery Israeli Writer

Michael Peach

I cannot decide
Whether you’re a Nero
Fiddling
While Israel’s cities seem
About to burn;
Or, like a player-hero
In the band
Of doomed Titanic,
You’re striving to console
Yourself and others
Soon to drown;
Or are simply
A natural optimist
Unmoved
By prophetic obligation
To incite our nation
Blinded by occupation,
While still it can,
To turn.
