To St. Paul (1)

Michael Peach

Forgive me, Saul, if I am wrong
(Psychology today is strong),
But in my heart I feel you erred –
On seeing God’s eternal word
Beneath "Christ’s" chiliastic stir –
To deify the Messenger.

Yet I accept your aims were pure
(Assuming that they conscious were):
For you had sensed Apocalypse
Would very soon the Jews eclipse,
And pagan gentiles were not game
To grasp a God without a name.
