When You Smile

Michael Peach

Unlike a Shakespeare dissembler,
A hungry shark,
An angry ape,
A dog with a stolen bone,
When you smile
And bare your whole, white teeth,
You do so
From ingenuous, generous
Disarming the defensive,
Aiding or piercing
Those souls
Who have lost or neglect
Their holy child within.
