When You Smile

Michael Peach

Unlike a Shakespeare dissembler,
A hungry shark,
An angry ape,
A dog with a stolen bone,
When you smile
And bare your whole, white teeth,
You do so
From ingenuous, generous
Empathy;
Disarming the defensive,
Aiding or piercing
Those souls
Who have lost or neglect
Their holy child within.
