Despite my declining
\nPhysical state,
\nIncreasing introspection
\nAnd aversion to mobile phones
\n(Techno-appendixes),
\nI cannot but admire
\nThe vibrant extraversion,
\nCheerful confidence
\nAnd democratic spirit
\nOf most of the young couples
\nWho, with their kids and pet dogs,
\nDominate the neighbourhoods
\nBordering the Yarkon Park \u2013
\nA jackal sanctuary;
\nMy “Ramat Tan”.<\/p>\n
Not only do they treat
\nThese creatures with respect
\nWithin the park,
\nBut at night
\nThey let them roam freely,
\nChoiring constantly,
\nThrough the local streets and yards.<\/p>\n
In short,
\nMy vivacious neighbours
\nKnow how to make the best
\nOf the here and now.
\nYet, inevitably affected
\nBy the ongoing catastrophic war,
\nWhich (due to the evil Iranian regime
\nAnd personal drama
\nOf our Faustian Prime Minister)
\nCould easily lead
\nTo Armageddon,
\nThey too must be fearful
\nRegarding the future \u2013
\nEspecially that of their children<\/p>\n
Believe it or not,
\nOne of the affects
\nThis direful situation
\nHas had on me
\nIs that the jackal-headed
\nAncient Egyptian god
\nAnubis,
\nWho guided Souls of the dead
\nFrom this world to the next,
\nOften enters my mind \u2013
\nNot least while walking with Bouli,
\nOur kind and elderly female dog,
\nNear the Yarkon River
\nAt night.<\/p>\n
For we are always accompanied
\nBy a pack of spritely,
\nInquisitive and, yes, mysterious
\nYoung jackals,
\nWho, when they approach
\nTo gently nudge the back of my legs
\nWith their muzzles
\nOr try to sniff Bouli,
\nIf the park’s lamps aren’t lit
\nLook like flitting, shadowy
\nPsychopomps.<\/p>\n
In a word,
\nThe Anubis of my imagination
\nRepresents not Satanic Sin-War
\nAnd his Hellish underground tunnels,
\nNor our Pied Piper Bibi,
\nBut, rather, an angelic guide
\nWho escorts the innocent victims
\nOf this tragic conflict
\nFrom darkness to Divine Light.<\/p>\n
Of this I am certain:
\nIf the Israeli hostages
\nAre released,
\nPeace with the Palestinians
\nAchieved
\nAnd Apocalypse averted,
\nI shall again see \u2013
\nEven in the dark \u2013
\nThese delightful creatures
\nAs frolicking
